Congratulations! It’s a Liebster!

My blog has been nominated for the Liebster Award! What is a Liebster Award, you ask? It’s an award given by travel bloggers to other travel bloggers to show support within the blogging community. Dakota Gypsy was nominated by JaMeka at Got the Travel Bug Too. JaMeka works full time AND is a travel writer which I think is amazing, and I love reading her blog! Make sure you check it out. 🙂

Rules for the Liebster Award:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog
  • Answer questions they ask you
  • Display the award on your blog
  • Nominate 10 others and let them know

My responses to JaMeka’s 10 Questions:

1. What inspired you to start your blog?

When I first made the decision to start traveling full-time in summer of 2015, I wanted a way to keep friends and family in the loop. I also have been addicted to reading travel blogs for years and I was excited to have a reason to join the community!

2. Where is your most favorite place that you’ve visited? Why?

Oh man, that’s hard. My most favorite place on the planet is my home city, Portland, Oregon, and it’s very hard to top that. But if forced to choose I might say Vermont. It’s a kindred spirit to Portland, for sure.

3. Do you prefer using your smartphone’s camera or a regular camera (ex. Canon, Nikon, etc)?

I would prefer using a real camera if I had one! I only have my phone and a cheap point-and-click I’ve had for years, so for now my Galaxy S5 is holding up the photography end of things. Someday I would love to buy a GoPro!

4. If you could only travel to one place in the world, where would it be?

I would take my son to Scotland. My family ancestry is Scottish, and my son is dying to see the land of our heritage (and all the cool castles!). If we had time on the same trip I’d go to Cardiff in Wales, because I am a huge Doctor Who and Sherlock fan and I want to see where they are filmed & go to the museum!

5. What is the most memorable thing that you’ve experienced on a trip?

My 3 days trying adventure sports in Colombia is my favorite stand-out memory. I told this story in my blog post about San Gil.

6. How long have you been traveling?

I’ve been traveling full-time since September 2015. I started with a 2-month road trip, during which I went to 28 US states and 5 Canadian provinces! I couchsurfed the entire way. I spent November & December in Florida and North Carolina visiting extended family, and I went to the San Juan Islands in Washington state right after New Years. I’ve been in South America since January 19th.

7. Window or aisle seat on flights?

Window seats! I have flown hundreds of times and I never stop being amazed that I’m sitting in a chair in the sky. 🙂

8. What type of accommodation do you prefer? (Hotel, hostel, B&B, etc)

When I have the budget, I love fancy hotels! But usually I stick to couchsurfing and hostels. I am hugely active in the couchsurfing community and love meeting new people this way. When I’d rather have some time to myself or I need to catch up on work, I’ll get a bed in a hostel.

9. Give one piece of advice for someone who is just starting a travel blog.

Take notes & label your pictures, because if you’re anything like me, you’ll be so busy traveling that you won’t get around to actually writing about what you’ve done until far after it’s actually happened. Also, join some travel blogging groups on Facebook!

10. Where are you traveling to next?

I’m planning a trip to Asia this fall! The plans are pretty loose right now but it’s looking like I’ll be starting with the Philippines and South Korea.
